I brought home a great New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc last night, Lobster Reef, and have been craving lobster ever since. Or should I say “lobstah”? That brought to mind the best lobster roll I’ve ever had. We were spending a week at Bar Harbor in October 2014 during our big RV road trip, and a friend recommended Thurston’s Lobster Pound. Even though I ate lobster every day that week, this is the one I still dream about.

Thurston’s is located in Bernard, Maine, on Mount Desert Island, about half an hour from Bar Harbor. It overlooks the busiest working harbor on the island, so you can watch the lobster boats at work. Talk about fresh!

We don’t have any plans to visit Maine again soon, so I’ll have to head to Juicy Lucy’s in Glenwood Springs instead. They’ve got a very nice lobster roll, too, and I can pretend that I hear the ocean.

My father-in-law is from New Hampshire, and there is still a huge family home in Lincoln. We did a trip out in 2007, and ate at this restaurant he insisted has the best lobster around. Sadly, I cannot remember the name, but I can remember this fact. It arrived as my entree as a whole lobster and I spent the entire dinner attempting badly to break into the thing. I don’t remember if it was good or not! I just remember that I prefer my lobsters and crabs with shells off before they come to my table! By the way lobster is good, but I prefer Dungeness crab in Oregon. But I guess I need to head to Thurston’s if I am ever again in Maine. I will order it “shell off!”

Our first night there I had a whole lobster. I almost gagged when I finally got it open and saw all of the green stuff. I’ll take a lobster roll or lobster mac over that any day! I do love Oregon crab, too. We ate at Vault 244 in Albany for our anniversary that same year, and I had fresh, local salmon stuffed stuffed with Dungeness crab. OMG!
