travel thursday: the tattered cover

Comments 5 Standard

I missed Travel Tuesday and have decided that Travel Thursday is just as catchy. It’s the new big thing. Tell your friends.

I was in Denver this week for a media reception at the new Rally Hotel, which is spectacular. If you’re planning to catch a Rockies game, you should stay there and save some time to explore McGregor Square.

Bluebird day exploring McGregor Square.

I was delighted when I arrived and the Tattered Cover Book Store was just next door. Believe it or not, this was my first time visiting this Denver treasure. As I explored, I gave myself a mental pat on the back for every one of the staff picks that I’ve already read. Good job, self!

I chose The Radium Girls for myself. I’ll let you know how it is. From the author’s website:

Written with a sparkling voice and breakneck pace, The Radium Girls fully illuminates the inspiring young women exposed to the “wonder” substance of radium, and their awe-inspiring strength in the face of almost impossible circumstances. Their courage and tenacity led to life-changing regulations, research into nuclear bombing, and ultimately saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Spending time in book stores is good for my soul. Hope you find yourself in one soon.

  1. Ryan, who grew up here, has been going to the Tattered Cover for his entire life. It was the first place we went downtown (when it was near Union Station). We actually got engaged at the 4th Story, the restaurant that was above the Tattered Cover in Cherry Creek! They moved that TC to Colfax and that restaurant is out of business.

We have a long relationship with Tattered Cover! Funny thing. As much as I used to read, I now listen to all books on Audible. My eyes have gotten too bad to sit and read, but I love books on Audible because I can listen during things like cleaning the kitchen and folding laundry.

We still have a lot of books and Ryan still buys one every time we are in Tattered Cover!

  2. I don’t know why I’d never been, but I’m sure glad it was right there by my hotel. I’m sure you’ve been to Powell’s City of Books. Scott had to drag me out of there!

    • I grew up going to Powell’s. The entire family would split up – all going to our separate sections. We wouldn’t reconvene for hours!!! The last time I was at Powell’s I was a little saddened by the area. It’s never been great but now there are so many homeless.

      • We were there in 2012, and there were already signs of the neighborhood changing. It was still a great place to stay…Henry’s Tavern, Jake’s Famous Crawfish and Powell’s. I can still tell you want I drank, ate and what books I bought, so you know it was memorable!
